Duddon's Got Talent

The performances of Friday afternoon certainly proved that Duddon has got talent! A variety of children performed in all sorts of ways to help raise money for Children in Need. The audience was thrilled with singing, dancing, gymnastics, magic and comedy, as well as many other acts. Thank you to all those children who took part in the final, as well as the auditions. Thanks also to those children who acted as judges, presenters, props and technical support and to all the audience who attended. Congratulations to the winners!

Remembrance

This display has been created in the school hall to mark Remembrance Day. Children in Years One, Two and Three made the poppies for the display and pupils from Class Four wrote poems to accompany it. Children have also been selling poppies in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Tiffany

As part of their Victorian studies this term, children in Class Four have been looking at the work of Victorian artists. One of the artists was Louis Comfort Tiffany, a late Victorian, renowned for his work in stained glass. This display reflects some of their work.

Visit to Erddig

Years Five and Six went on a visit to Erddig, a National Trust property near Wrexham. The visit was to give them some first hand experience of life in Victorian times. They dressed up as Victorian servants and tried out some of the jobs that they would have been expected to do.

the whole school has been very lucky this term, as we have been having visits from a Chinese teacher, Xhen, from Beijing. She has been teaching children Mandarin, paper cutting and giving them a taste of what it is like to live in China. Some of the children have written about her visits for the display.

Children from Years Five and Six were delighted to be able to show everyone around the school grounds, explaining about the garden and how we have been changing the environment. The weather was wonderful and many families supported the day, enjoying the stalls, refreshments and everything that was on offer. Willow huts

This week the children constructed three willow huts at the bottom of the school field. Local willow artist, Caroline Gregson, spent two days with us, organising groups of children and showing them how to construct the huts, which even have round windows! Do take a walk down the field to have a closer look.

Sensory garden

Due to the recent glorious sunshine over the Easter holiday, (and the even more recent rain!)the garden is really beginning to gain colour and interest. The vegetables are also sprouting well and we have already been able to enjoy rhubarb and salad crops from the garden. Particular thanks to Katie, Emily and Caitlin who have been wonderful at helping to water and plant seeds.

Insect houses

Children in Years Five and Six have been designing some insect houses to add to the school environment and attract wildlife. They have designed their insect houses, built them and written instructions for others to follow. This is part of activities for Science Week.

Pond

Thanks to finance from the PTA, we have been able to extend the access to the school pond, providing a second access point and a path around the side. New railings have also added to the safety aspect. With better access, we should be able to have more opportunity to investigate the life of the pond.

Aztec masks

Years Three and Four have been making Aztec masks, looking at how the Aztecs made and used masks as part of their way of life. The children's masks were made using a paper mache base, cutting eye and mouth holes, painting the masks black and sticking on paper mosaic pieces to represent the turquoise used by the Aztecs.

Superheroes

Children in Class Three have been writing about superheroes and drawing pictures of them. They are displayed in the classroom. Jessica and Harriet worked together on this one.

Signs of Spring

The first signs that Spring is on its way have appeared in the Sensory Garden, with the arrival of the snowdrops. Other bulbs are making their way through the soil as well and hopefully when the new mulch is laid on the paths, we can get back into the garden to see what else is growing.

As part of their topic of 'Superheroes' this term, children have been studying some of the work of Andy Warhol. They have tried to use his ideas to create their own pictures. This picture was made by Katy, but there are also others on display in Key Stage One.

Zoo outreach session

On Thursday Class One enjoyed a visit from a member of Chester Zoo's Outreach staff. Becca came into school to give a talk about the rainforest as a habitat. She also brought a Giant Madagascan Hissing Cockroach and a corn snake, which the children were able to handle. It was a great experience and will link up well to their future visit to the Zoo after half-term.

This term Class One are studying the rainforest and the photo shows the beginning of their classroom display. They will be looking at the location of rainforests and thinking about ways in which we could all help to save them from destruction.

Class One studied the amazing architecture and design work of Gaudi. They looked particularly at the way he used shape and pattern to create his original structures. After gathering ideas, they created their own designs inspired by his work.

Year Four pupils spent time looking at the work of 20th century Dutch artist, Ton Schulten. As part of their local environment topic, they also looked at photographs of the local area, then applied their observations of Schulten's work to creating their own pictures. All the children (and adults!) enjoyed supporting our Children in Need event on Friday. Younger children had made and decorated biscuits to sell at the Coffee Morning and thank you to all those who also donated cakes to sell. Key Stage One children also made spotty Pudsey bandanas to wear for the day. We had plenty of loose change in our bucket to count and will let you know the grand total of what we raised. Peckforton Christmas Dinner

Great excitement was to be had in Class Three this week, when the chicks which were being incubated finally began to hatch. Seven chicks hatched on Tuesday and were named by the children as Cheryl, Kerry, Sam, Fluffy, Chirpy, Scooby Doo and Batman. The children made some wonderful booklets, writing about the life cycle of chickens and are now doing the story of The Ugly Duckling in Literacy. They are even hoping to do a dance to the music too!

World War Two

During our Eco Week in the Summer term, children designed ideas for some totem poles based on the five senses. Thanks to Stu Scott-Davies and his workshop full of amazing tools, they were then carved onto wooden totem poles and have now been put in place in the Sensory Garden. Many thanks to Stu and to Steve Davies for coming along this morning to cement them in. They look great and the children will have lots of fun looking for their pictures.

London

Years Five and Six had an amazing time in London this week, visiting the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, City Hall, the Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern and St. Paul's Cathedral. They also had the experience of travelling on the Underground at rush hour! We received many compliments about their good behaviour and they were a credit to the school. All returned safely although a little tired!

Children in Class Three got straight down to creative activity this week, as they got used to their new class. They drew pictures of themselves for a display about their class and created some artwork to accompany the display.

There have been further developments in the Sensory Garden over the summer holidays, with a new area for a large flowerbed and another pathway for the children to explore along. Caterpillar quiz

There was plenty of wildlife to be found in the Sensory Garden today, including this mystery caterpillar who, along with some of his friends, was munching happily on some leaves. Does anyone have any idea what kind of caterpillar it is? The garden was also home to many different butterflies, birds, insects, and even a squirrel this afternoon. The sweet peas are blooming beautifully and the tomatoes in the greenhouse are finally ripening.

Children in Years Three and Four had a fantastic time in Castleton this week, attending a three day residential. The weather was amazing, the food was delicious and the children had an action packed time, taking part part in team building games, archery, role play, siege engine building, archaeology and an incredibly long walk to Treak Cliff Cavern! Thanks to all the children, who were a pleasure to be with.

Class One had a great time learning how to make sushi this afternoon. They are looking at Japanese food and also tasted fish soup and noodles. Fun with skipping!

The whole school, including children from the Nursery, experienced learning some new skills today. The Small Earth Games Company came in and held workshops throughout the day, teaching French skipping to all the classes. Six Year Five children became helpers to all the groups and will be on hand in future to help demonstrate skills and support others. The day culminated with the school gathering together to demonstrate the range of activities they had taken part in.

Enviro-rhino

Our rhino has finally been painted and is about to leave on its journey to Chester to join all the other rhinos on display from July. All the children in school have been involved in painting it and our theme was taken from our Eco-Week last week. All sorts of other activities took place, from balloon releases to deigning totem poles for the Sensory Garden, as well as thinking about slogans to look after the environment and studying trees. We celebrated the week by holding a school assembly on Friday afternoon to share what we had achieved.

Congratulations to our family of great tits who are nesting in our nest box, watched by our webcam. Today, the first of the eggs has hatched, after two weeks of incubation. Wildlife watch

Many children were lucky enough yesterday to do a bit of vole watching in the Sensory Garden. A small bank vole appeared in the garden and seemed quite happy with all the curious attention that it received, running around very close to the children. It is lovely to see the wildlife which is taking up residence in the garden and the interest that the children are showing in it.

The activity in our nestbox is continuing. The great tits have completed their nest and have now begun to lay eggs - three so far! With the help of our ICT technician, we can now connect our webcam to the computer and will be able to capture images and send them round the school for the children to view. They are finding it fascinating so far.

We have activity in our bird box at last! Great tits are moving in, having begun building on Saturday and they have continued to build over the weekend. The nest is now nearly finished. Materials have included grass, twigs, leaves and now finally, a soft lining of moss. We have been watching all the activity through our webcam in the nest box. Hopefully, the birds will lay eggs and raise their family so that the children can watch. Pop into school if you would like to have a look.

Rhino mania

The school is participating in the Rhino mania project, organised by Chester. We have a rhino ready in school for children to paint. It will become one of the many exhibits to be placed around Chester during the summer, alongside those of local artists and other schools. Watch the rhino change in school as our design develops!

Children in Class Three made images using the computer and transferred them onto T-shirts as part of their work on Fair Trade. Some of these are on show in the classroom, along with other work in the project. The Fair Trade stall was also present at our Easter Coffee Morning.

Science Week

There have been all sorts of activities going on in school this week. Children have been pond dipping, finding newts, larvae and a host of other creatures; we have had Techniquest holding workshops about solar power; all sorts of lessons based around Science and a hands on session with wild animals, including snakes, tarantulas, a Harris hawk, meerkats and a genet. This afternoon, the whole school got together to share their activities and tell each other about their exciting experiences.

Tie-dyeing

Pupils from Years Five and Six used tie-dyeing to form this display. They used cotton fabric squares, laid tie dye strings in a pattern and tied it all together with elastic bands. The cloths were then boiled in hot water and salt to fix the dye. They got some super results. Have a look in the school foyer to view their designs.

All the children in school had the wonderful opportunity to listen to Key Strings. They brought a wide selection of musical instruments to school and gave children the chance to travel in their 'time machine' to experience a range of music throughout the ages. Their skill and enthusiasm was infectious and the children had a fantastic time.

Fair Trade Coffee Morning

Children in Years One and Two entertained parents at a Fair Trade Coffee Morning, which helped them to become more aware of what Fair Trade means. They made cakes using Fair Trade ingredients and helped to sell other Fair Trade items. They also wore their wonderful T-shirts which they had printed images onto, using the computer. Any money raised will be donated to Fair Trade.

Indian batik

This picture is one of many in a display in Class Three. In looking at the art of India, children drew designs and used inks to colour their fabric before using batik techniques to complete their pictures. Some added sparkle comes from the sequined borders which mount the pictures! Pop into Class Three to view the rest of their wonderful work.

Willow deer

During this term, Year Four have been thinking about creating animal structures. As part of this, all the children in Key Stage Two took part in a Willow Workshop, with local artist Caroline Gregson. She spent the day in school, working with small groups of pupils and together they created our magnificent deer which is now standly proudly in our Sensory Garden. We all learned a great deal about making structures and hope that 'Willow' will be well looked after in the garden.

Peacock

Children in Class Three created a wonderful peacock, using chalk pastels and gold pens. The peacock is a popular symbol used in India, which they discovered as part of their topic. If you would like to see it, look for it in their classroom.

Mark Rothko

Year Four children studied the work of Mark Rothko, a Latvian American artist. After experimenting in their sketchbooks with colour combinations, they created their own pictures in his style, using chalk pastels.

Prayer mats

As part of their study of India, children in Classes Three and Four made Islamic prayer mats when they learned about the Islamic religion. They looked at pictures of prayer mats and then carefuly drew Islamic designs on their own mats and added tassels to decorate them.

One of the children in Class Three liked elephants so much that they made one for their homework! They used papier mache and paint. It's fantastic - well done! If you would like to see it, pop into their class room.

Children in both Key Stage One and Two are looking at India this term. Some Year Six pupils drew a detailed large scale map of India for Key Stage One children to paint. They used papier mache techniques to build relief work and sponged a background for the sea. After that, they added some of their paintings of animals that live in India.

Wear Red Day

Thank you for all your support for our 'Wear Red' Day for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. We raised a wonderful £327.37 to send to the Disasters and Emergencies Committee. Children in Key Stage Two have been following news items and have looked at how earthquakes are formed and their effects. Some children have also written poems about how it would feel to be there in Haiti. Their work is displayed in our library area.

Earthquake Appeal

Following the disastrous earthquake in Haiti, the school will be supporting the DEC Appeal on Wednesday 27th January. We are having a 'Wear Red' day, where children will wear their school uniform, with the addition of another item of red clothing, in return for a donation for the Appeal. All the local schools are also joining in with this project which was suggested by the Red Cross.

India Day

Children in Key Stage One and those in Years Five and Six are studying India this term. On Wednesday Class One children dressed in a variety of Indian clothing, from exotic, sequined saris to Indian cricket players! They had a fantastic talk from Sadie's granddad, which was followd by a specially cooked Indian lunch by Jo, our fantastic cook. Many parents came to join in the fun and many children were converted to Indian cooking!

William Morris

Pupils in Class One looked at the work of William Morris as part of their Victorian topic. They created their own wallpaper and textile designs and also painted ceramic tiles using ideas from nature, as Morris did.

Eco-Schools

After gaining our Bronze Eco-Schools Award in the Spring term, we have been successful in applying for the Silver Eco-Schools Award. This follows the further development of the outside spaces, our monitoring of energy use within the school and an increase in our commitment to recycle and reduce waste, which has been supported by the PTA, who organised the Bag2School project. The Eco Action Group have also been busy applying for a Cheshire Wildlfe Trust Award which we hope to receive soon. Well done to everyone on the Action Group who has worked so hard to achieve this stage (particularly Henry, Ben and Iona) and to everyone else in the school community for supporting us.

Planting for Spring!

While Class One were out working in the Sensory Garden, they continued planting more spring bulbs under the trees. These include miniature daffodils, as well as ordinary daffodils. Even Mr. Hudson came out to help! The children are really beginning to appreciate the effort going into the garden - especially when it's theirs!

Making paths

Children in Class One went out to work on the Sensory Garden. They helped to lay the crushed slate chippings on the paths, as well as spreading the new bark chippings. The paths will now have a variety of colours and surfaces to be enjoyed. Many hands certainly made lighter work! This part of the path surrounds the cherry tree under which lies the memorial to the children of Dunblane.

Our Sensory Garden is beginning to develop, with our beautiful reflective stainless steel water feature and some more planting. Our new paths have been constructed and many of the children have been helping to lay the new gravel surface. Other textures will include crushed slate. We also seem to have acquired a Christmas visitor and many birds are visiting our feeding station now that the colder weather is with us.

It was a busy day in school today, as all pupils got involved with Blue Peter's Send a Smile Appeal. The appeal is aiming to provide hospital gowns for children in India when they have their operations for cleft palates. For every 50 gowns sent, it saves enough money to pay for another operation. The children really enjoyed themselves and so did the adults who helped them.

Operation Christmas Child

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Operation Christmas Child appeal. A total of 43 boxes were collected to send off to children for Christmas. Pupils helped to load their boxes on to the van when they were collected today.

Children in Need

Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising event today for Children in Need. It was certainly busy! The children had a wonderful time bringing in toys and buying others to take home, as well as consuming all those fantastic cakes and biscuits! Mrs. Wearden and her stars began the day for us in sparkling style with a super assembly, where we were introduced to some visitors that she interviewed - Gordon Brown, Michael Jackson and others! Class One had a sponsored half hour SILENT reading time to help contribute as well. We will let you know how much we raised as soon as possible.

Disco Night!

The children had a great time at the Disco this evening. The outfits were amazing and so was the dancing (for both the girls and the boys!) Thank you to all those PTA members who organised the event for everyone to enjoy and thanks also to all those parents who stayed to help. The evening also helped to add to our collection for Children in Need. Did you catch Terry Wogan mentioning our fundraising on this morning's radio show?

Poppies

Children in Class Three have made some wonderful poppies with Mrs. Perry as part of of the school's focus on Remembrance Day. They used pastels to create them on black paper before they were arranged into a Remembrance wreath. They also looked at Georgia O'Keeffe's poppies to give them some inspiration. Beautiful!

Remembrance

Our assemblies this week are about Remembrance and we have displays in school to reflect this, as well as selling poppies to support the British Legion. The assembly on November 11th will be lead by one of our Year Five children and Class One will be involved in the Friday assembly, as well as writing some Remembrance poems.

Blue dragon

The dragon theme has continued this term with the creation of an amazing blue dragon in Class Four. Children looked listened to a story and then also wrote ideas to the dragon, as well as having a fantastic time making him! Well done, Mrs. Garnham!

Shoe shop

There is a new role play area in Class Three - a shoe shop! Children are having fun doing Maths by measuring shoe sizes and length of feet, as well as enjoying being in role in the shoe shop.

Hairy McLary

We were really pleased that Treetops joined our Book Week celebrations. They also looked at stories by Lynley Dodd and chose to focus on Hairy McLary. Their wonderful pictures have now joined us on display in school. Thank you!

Rose arches

Thank you to Ant Killilea who gave up his time to construct our two new rose arches in the Sensory Garden.The arches have been planted to allow roses, clematis and honeysuckle to ramble over them. We would be pleased to welcome anyone else who would like to get involved and help the garden's development - there is lots of work to do!

Book Week display

Children in Key Stage One looked at another story by Lynley Dodd called 'The Other Ark' as part of their Book Week activities. They designed and painted their own amazing animals, using features from a range of animals. Their display in the school library includes the ark and the animals they created.

Quarry Bank Mill

Class One had a fantastic day out at Quarry Bank Mill, studying features of the River Bollin. The weather was amazing and we all enjoyed the picnic out in the meadow at lunchtime and playing Poohsticks on the bridge. The visit to the Apprentice House also helped the children to understand what a hard life most children had to enjoy in Victorian times. Thanks also to those parents who came along to support us.

PTA Race Night

Thanks to all the PTA members for their hard work on Race Night, which proved to be good fun and entertainment for everyone. Many races were sponsored and many prizes won! Thanks also to everyone who came along and supported the event and helped to raise funds for the school. We now loook forward to the next event!

School Council

The new councillors for the School Council have been elected. This year we have eleven members of the Council. Iona is Chairperson, Ben is Vice-Chairperson and Millie is our Secretary. Congratulations to all of them and we look forward to their new ideas. Well done to all those people who put themselves forward for election and if you weren't elected this year, try again next year!
